Erika Shore, Ph.D. is a full-time private practitioner in Atlanta, working with adolescents and adults in individual, couples and group therapy modalities. Dr. Shore has been intensively trained in Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) and has led outpatient DBT Skills Training groups for the past ten years. She originally received her training in a DBT intensive outpatient program at Two Brattle Center in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Dr. Shore also has extensive experience working with clients in all stages of addiction and recovery. She worked at Talbott Recovery Campus for seven years. While there, she worked with dual diagnosis clients and developed and implemented components of DBT skills training into the program’s existing treatment model based on Alcoholics Anonymous. She also developed and implemented an anger management program to treat disruptive professionals in the workplace. Dr. Shore utilizes an integrative approach in working with clients, including behavioral, strategic, experiential, interpersonal, and object relations perspectives. As Dr. Shore has been doing long-term psychotherapy with individuals, she has developed a strong interest and experience in the treatment of trauma. Dr. Shore is a member of the International Society for the Study of Trauma Component group. Dr. Shore also integrates mindfulness into the practice of psychotherapy and treatment of various emotional difficulties. She is fascinated by, learning, and developing ways to integrate body awareness in psychotherapy. She is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania with a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology. She earned her Master's degree in Psychological Counseling from Columbia University and her Doctorate from Boston College.
Dialectical Behavior Therapy skills training groups were originally developed as one modality in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), a treatment approach developed for those with chronic suicidality. However, this model has been found to be useful in treating a number of problematic behaviors (alcohol/drug abuse, bingeing/purging, ruminative thoughts, symptoms of trauma, etc.) that often result from emotion dysregulation. In therapy with individuals overwhelmed by their emotions, sessions may often be spent helping clients manage the problems/crises of daily life. As a result, there may not be adequate time or the client may not be in a mindset to learn new skills that are needed. Thus, a skills training group can be a helpful adjunct to individual therapy, providing the clients a structured environment in which to learn new emotion regulation skills.
DBT skills training groups are very structured, skills-based groups that provide clients a way to better understand their difficulties, develop a language to name their experience, obtain support and validation from others regarding their past and present struggles, and work toward behavior change in an encouraging, supportive and ultimately motivating environment.
