The significance we attribute to money is rooted in our family history and culture. Inadequately understood, our personal symbolizations of money cause us difficulty in practice, resulting in inadequate contracting, erratic fee-setting and/or collections, and difficulty facilitating the discussion of money issues in group therapy. Often an area of primary vulnerability in our lives, our relationship with money can reveal important information about patterns of relating that are enacted between group members and the group leader. This workshop seeks to reduce our shame and anxiety in talking about money and its meanings so we may facilitate deeper therapeutic work with our groups and improve our business practices.
- Participants will be able to identify their “money type,” as an indication of their own relationship with money.
- Participants will be able to compare and contrast their own relationship with money with that of their group members.
- Participants will be able to define the concept of symbolic communication, and give examples of ways in which money can be used as a form of symbolic communication.
- Analyze the ethical components of their relationship with money, and apply these components.
- Identify their own anxieties and those of others in dealing with money matters in group therapy.
