Workshop Details

Workshop Description:

This workshop will address several issues to consider when adding a sexual abuse survivor to a general therapy group. We’ll discuss some of the significant trauma issues (for instance, distrust, shame, dissociation) that might impact group dynamics, how the group therapist can recognize when underlying trauma issues are being played out in the group, and how the group therapist can facilitate connection through commonalities.

We will address other issues according to the specific interests of the participants. Interests may include: What happens when you have someone in group who begins to remember sexual abuse for first time? When is a sexual abuse survivor not appropriate for group therapy? How do you contain traumatic memory work in group?

Objectives:

At the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:
1 ) Name four trauma issues that can impact group dynamics;
2 ) Describe ways in which the group leader can recognize underlying trauma issues in both group dynamics and in individual behaviors; and
3 ) Discuss strategies for facilitating connection among group members, specific to the group(s) they are leading, including containment of traumatic memory work in group, dissociation, and appropriateness for group.
