Dr. Earley is an addiction medicine physician who treats all types of addictive diseases. He also works with patients already in recovery, providing long term therapy for those who suffer from addiction. His professional expertise extends to advocacy for professionals before agencies and licensing boards. Dr. Earley is a dynamic speaker and educator; he speaks nationally and internationally on topics of addiction, its treatment and addiction in health care professionals. He is a Fellow of the American Society of Addiction Medicine and is currently the Medical Director of Talbott Recovery Campus here in Atlanta.
All providers of addiction treatment agree that the most effective medium of psychotherapy for patients who suffer from addiction is group psychotherapy. This conclusion begs the question: “What type of group psychotherapy works?” and a more subtle question “At what time along the road from drug use to recovery do I use which techniques?”
This three hour workshop will explore the basic techniques for the group psychotherapy of addiction. The workshop will identify the stages of change that the addicted client goes through, and which techniques work the best during each stage of the change continuum. It is not a workshop designed to teach psychotherapists how to work with clients in stable recovery, but rather an examination of how to get him or her to this recovery and stay there. The workshop is not wedded to specific school of therapy for addiction treatment, but does cover some CBT, psychodynamic, and AddictionMind constructs originally taught by Tom Butcher, Ph.D.
The workshop will use a combination of didactic material and simulated therapy sessions. Dr. Earley will use staff from the Talbott Recovery Campus to demonstrate the basic elements of addiction group psychotherapy. Interactive training and participant volunteers as group leaders should make this workshop fun as well as educational.
